This page is intended to provide ideas and information for student and graduates studying for a degree in Psychology.
What skills have I gained on my course?
Psychology graduates develop a range of skills transferable to graduate careers. These include:
- Systematic approach to problem solving
- Ability to work and learn independently
- Ability to plan and design research projects
- Effective time management skills
- Effective report writing and presentation skills
- Ability to analyse and evaluate statistical data
- Effective IT skills and knowledge of statistical software
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Psychology graduates also tend to be highly numerate as courses accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) contain substantial statistic elements as well as research methodology and scientific methods.
Because of these areas of study, psychology students are able to understand and manipulate both quantitative and qualitative data, use computers and problem solve effectively. Consequently, psychology graduates are well placed to move into research or numeracy-based careers such as market research, academia and accounting.
Occupations associated with Psychology
Other Occupations where a Psychology degree would be useful
Its common for psychology graduates to enter a wide range of jobs on graduating either in preparation for one of the roles above or to follow a different path, the list below gives possible options but is not exhaustive!
Postgraduate Study
Postgraduate study may enable you to explore aspects of Psychology in greater depth or to study a new subject. Postgraduate training and study is a requirement to become a chartered psychologist (there are alternative routes to chartership but only a handful of well experienced people use these routes each year). Many psychology graduates spend a year or more gaining work experience before embarking on postgraduate study due to course entry requirements. A postgraduate qualification, either academic or vocational, is required to enter many fields of work such as Social work, teaching and nursing.
