What skills have I gained on my course?

Employers are interested in the skills and competencies you gained from your degree, therefore it is very important you can recognise them and present them effectively on CVs and in interviews:

Subject specific Skills:

  • Develop the ability to interpret critically a range of primary sources, including visual and material cultural products
  • Explain and evaluate the relationships between primary and secondary material
  • Engage in independent research using a variety of sources both readily available and more difficult to access
  • Demonstrate an understanding of different historical approaches and methods
  • Develop cogent arguments in relation to historical issues and debates, and to support such arguments
  • Present work using scholarly language and employing appropriate scholarly conventions, deploying appropriate bibliographic and presentational skills
  • Apply skills of historical analysis across time and/or place

Postgraduate Study

Postgraduate study may enable you to explore aspects of History in greater depth or to study a new subject.  A postgraduate qualification, either academic or vocational, is required or useful to enter many fields of work related to History such as museum work, archivists, or teaching. You should consider why you want to do postgraduate study, whether it will affect your career prospects and whether you are likely to get funding.
