What skills have I gained on my course?
Employers are interested in the skills and competencies you gained from your degree, therefore it is very important that you can recognise them and present them effectively on CVs and in interviews:
- Communication and interpersonal in order to take patient histories, explain diagnosis and treatment displaying empathy and sensitivity where appropriate
- Problem solving adopting a logical and analytical approach
- Accuracy in respect of patient record keeping and the dispensing of prescriptions
- Business skills and commercial awareness for self employment
- Ability to apply in depth knowledge and practical skills required for competent, confident and effective clinical practice within an interdisciplinary team network
Occupations associated with a degree in Herbal Medicine or Acupuncture
Most graduates will become practitioners – Medical Herbalists and Acupuncturists – with most being self employed or working within a complementary or holistic therapy centre. Occasionally employment is in a hospital, pert time through the NHS

Postgraduate Study
Postgraduate study may enable you to explore aspects of Herbal Medicine or Acupuncture in greater depth, or to study a new subject. A post graduate qualification, either academic or vocational is required to enter many fields of work related to Herbal Medicine or Acupuncture such as those in the list above. There is also a need to keep skills and knowledge up to date throughout your career. Additional study in areas such as counselling can be beneficial to practice. You should consider why you want to do postgraduate study, whether it will affect your career prospects and whether you are likely to obtain funding.
